Eric Almeida’s Thoughts On…
Work
Why are people from the advertising and marketing world joining social causes?
Aside from wanting to be on the right side of any cultural zeitgeist, virtue signaling is a cheap way for marketers to bring attention to their brand.
What do you do for fun and what would you be doing if it wasn’t advertising?
Anything to do with music. I play a few instruments and used to produce + DJ. With more free time, I’d be using my creative energy for those pursuits again. Maybe one day.
What advice would you give to anyone trying to make it in the marketing world?
Learn how to Google. You can legitimately become an expert on ANYTHING in the world of digital marketing with the infinite amount of free resources readily available online.
What is your hidden talent and how did you discover it?
Finding ways to optimize pretty much anything I set my focus on; through many years of experience.
It’s Thursday, you’ve got to be at a project in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday. Your flight and hotel are booked; your visa is ready. What are the top five things you do before you leave?
- Arrange for my cats to be fed and shown attention while I’m gone
- Clean up my house so I’m not returning to a mess
- Figuring out the bare minimum I can pack so I won’t have to check a bag
- Getting ahead of any project work so I’m not juggling too much while traveling
- Updating my downloaded Spotify playlists for the trip
What motivates you and what doesn’t?
I’m motivated most by making the biggest positive impact on anything I’m involved in. Whether that’s driving results for a business or making peoples’ lives easier with my applied skills/knowledge. Money is cool and all, but I can take it or leave it as long as my bills are paid and my cats are fed.
If you met with a client and that person had his or her arms attached backward, how would you greet him or her?
An elbow bump would probably be the most logical?
What is the worst question to ask, or answer, in an interview?
I dislike anything that’s too open-ended, but especially anything along the lines of, “why do you feel like you’re a good fit for this role?” It often feels disingenuous, awkward, or both.
How did people ever get anything done without the existence of websites and Google?
Slowly.
How does the internet work?
It’s all 1’s and 0’s looking for the next sequence of 1’s and 0’s.
Family
How would you live your life if you had a week to live?
Planning and doing anything that results in ameliorating the most human suffering possible.
What was the last gift you gave someone?
An elegant-looking coaster/paperweight engraved with this quote: “The thing about smart motherfuckers is that sometimes, they sound like crazy motherfuckers to stupid motherfuckers.”
What did you play with as a child?
Some of my fondest memories as a child are from the literal hundreds of hours I put into Final Fantasy III (aka VI) on my hand-me-down SNES.
Who is your role model, and why?
Glen Allsopp. Everything I read from him is some combination of mind-blowing, invigorating and humbling.
Philosophy
Where do you find peace?
Probably somewhere between 80 and 110 Hz.
Would you rather walk backward for the rest of your life, or stub your toe with every step you took? Explain your choice.
Walking backwards would be a lot less painful, duh.
How would you live your life if you were going to live forever?
Bored.
Do you believe in Bigfoot?
No, but I believe in the power of human belief.
If there was a movie produced about your life, what would it be called? Who would play you, and why?
“Round Peg, Square Holes”. Starring Jaden Smith to make sure it’s as ambiguously esoteric as possible.
If you could only eat one kind of food for the rest of your life what would you choose? Why?
Tacos. Aside from my love for spicy food, you can pretty much go any direction with tortillas.
What’s something that grosses you out that other people would find weird?
Feet. I find them intensely repulsive, and it’s hard for me to get over what I feel is a character flaw in people who prefer to wear flip-flops everywhere.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box, what color would you be and why?
Clear. Only a few people will appreciate what I bring to the table. For all the rest, I’d rather be upfront and honest that it’s totally cool to throw me out instead of wasting each other’s time.
Out of all the internet fads out there (TikTok Dances, Youtubers, Facebook avatars, etc), which did you hate the most?
Google+.
Would you rather know without a doubt the purpose and direction of your life or never have to worry about money for the rest of your life?
The latter. “Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive.”
